oil/canvas, 100x80cm Almost done, still need to work on some small details, but I started it more than 3 weeks ago and need to take a break on it A little bit inspired by Ingres "Big odalisque", specially the fan is taken from there Any suggestion comment and crit is more than welcome, thanks!
First of all, kudos for taking on such well recognized imagery and totally making the composition your own. I really love what you've done with the woman's pose and stare. Unlike Igres' Odelisque who shyly peeks over her shoulder, yours has her gaze set directly back at the viewer. In addition to that, while her pose is relaxed, she appears to have either just rolled to one side, or about to sit up.
I admire the wonderful handling of the fabric both on the couch, draped on her body, and the wall covering. Your handling of light is also absolutely stunning. The fine details in the creases of her feet, the tassels on the pillow, and lace border on the sheets are superb. Lastly, I adore the painterly quality that is still present in this image.
Here are a few things I noticed that you may decide to change if you wish: I understand how diffucult it is to paint skin and even more so when there is clear area of natural white light. The woman's arm and face look appear flatter than the lower half of her body because there's less modeling. I think if you pulled even a duller highlight from her calf or hip into her forehead or the edge of her arm it wouldn't read quite that way. Another thing that leads me to think there should be more light on her arm and face is the table of fruit. There are strong highlights on the fruit and silver dish.
Overall, fantastic work! You're a contemporary master!
I believe the overall compostion is very compelling to the viewer and I belive the artist has captured the detail of many of the objects within the painting. I also believe that lighting could have been adapted in the painting and the contrast between shadows and light been made more prominent this then creating a more atmospheric asthetic feeling I believe also more focus could have been made on the face of the character. Overall though I believe the painting to have a very good impact and it is evident that the artist has spent a lot of time on the painting.
Hi, this is beautiful. I would love to hang this on my wall, have been looking for passion inspiring art for weeks. I'm in the Philippines and the shipping is very unreliable. Is there a way for me to pay for a scan? Thanks!
Ingres would be really jealous!!! Ask for 100 critiques and you get 100 different Odalisques. However, yours is real You created it is yours, and by the way, She is beautiful!!!!!
